Why MetaMask?
MetaMask remains the most widely used self-custodial wallet with over 100 million monthly active users. It supports Ethereum, all EVM-compatible chains, and integrates with virtually every DeFi protocol and NFT marketplace.
Step 1: Installation
Download MetaMask only from metamask.io. It's available as a browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge) and as a mobile app (iOS, Android). Never download from third-party sites — fake MetaMask apps are a common scam vector.
Step 2: Creating Your Wallet
Click "Create a New Wallet" and set a strong password (12+ characters, mixed case, numbers, symbols). This password only protects your local device — it does NOT recover your wallet if you lose access.
Step 3: The Seed Phrase — Your Most Important Step
MetaMask will generate a 12-word seed phrase. Write this down on paper. Store it in a secure, offline location. Never screenshot it, never type it into any website, never share it with anyone. This seed phrase is the master key to your wallet — anyone with it can access all your funds.
Step 4: Adding Networks
By default, MetaMask connects to Ethereum mainnet. To add other networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, or Polygon, use Chainlist.org for verified RPC endpoints. Click "Add to MetaMask" and approve.
Step 5: Funding Your Wallet
Buy crypto directly through MetaMask's on-ramp partners (MoonPay, Transak) or transfer from a centralized exchange. Always send a small test transaction first before transferring large amounts.
Security Best Practices
Use a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) connected to MetaMask for amounts over $1,000. Enable transaction simulation to preview what a transaction will do before signing. Never interact with unknown tokens airdropped to your wallet — they're often scam contracts.
