CME Group's 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options trading went live on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. CT, delivering on the plan the exchange first announced in February.
How it works
CME crypto contracts now trade continuously on CME Globex, with at least a two-hour weekly maintenance period over the weekend. Institutions can hedge bitcoin and ether exposure on a regulated U.S. venue at any hour instead of waiting for Sunday evening.
First weekend
More than 7,200 cryptocurrency futures and options contracts — roughly $50 million in notional — traded over the inaugural weekend. That is modest next to weekday volumes, but weekend liquidity typically takes time to build as market makers and clients adapt.
The May backdrop
- BTC fell about 3.5% and ETH about 11.2% in May, even as global equities rallied.
- Monthly exchange volume dropped to a 2026 low of about $619 billion.
- Ethereum's staking queue hit roughly 3.7 million ETH, and developers aligned on the "Glamsterdam" upgrade.
Continuous trading should help narrow the "CME gap" that has long appeared on Monday opens.
