Western Union Launches USDPT Stablecoin on Solana With Anchorage Digital

Table of Contents

Western Union launched its USDPT stablecoin on the Solana blockchain on May 4, 2026. The token is issued by federally chartered crypto bank Anchorage Digital and backed by U.S. dollar reserves.

How Western Union will use it

  • Treasury and agent settlement: selected partners can settle near-instantly, around the clock, reducing idle balances across Western Union's network.
  • Stable by Western Union: a consumer-facing payment service built on USDPT is planned to launch this year in more than 40 countries.
  • Rollout: initial USDPT operations via Fireblocks begin in the Philippines and Bolivia, with wider expansion across the network through 2026.

Why it matters

Western Union's core business — moving money across borders — is exactly the use case stablecoins threaten to disrupt. By issuing its own dollar token, the company is trying to capture the cost and speed benefits of blockchain settlement rather than lose customers to them. Analysts noted the move could reshape Western Union's payment model by cutting pre-funding needs in its agent network.

The launch also adds a major traditional-finance brand to Solana's growing list of stablecoin and tokenization partners.
